What Happens When You Close on a House

Closing day explained: documents, funds, keys, and what comes next.

Closing is the finish line of the purchase contract. Know what to bring, what you will sign, how funds move, and what to do in the first 24 hours after you get the keys.

Closing is when ownership transfers. You will review the Closing Disclosure, sign a stack of loan and title documents, bring required identification, and confirm final numbers match what you expected.

What to bring

  • Government ID
  • Wire confirmation or cashier’s check if required
  • Proof of homeowners insurance
  • Any final lender conditions
  • A folder for copies and keys

Right after closing

Test locks, locate the main water shutoff, check smoke and CO detectors, and walk the house with your inspection notes. The first night is easier if basics like lighting, cleaning supplies, and a plunger are already handled.
